YOU'VE UNDOUBTEDLY MADE A MARK, KING!
I wrote a presentation piece for a good friend taking a course in Culture and Community Development in the latter part of 2018 on the role/importance of mass media for community development; the passing of Chadwick Boseman today reminded me of that piece in which I dwelled so much on his movie, Black Panther for the importance of FILM for community development.
I touched on how he as a movie character gave the Black community the representation they needed compared to the stereotypical roles the community is almost always known for before the release of the blockbuster.
Talked about how the movie provided an avenue for black Americans to celebrate their heritage in a way they haven't done before. Attached are pictures of African Americans in their multitudes with their African dresses, head wraps, and what have you at the premiering of the movie.
Coupled with that, pointed out the pleasure of blacks all over seeing themselves reflected in the movie.
Narrowed down to how inspirational the character, Chadwick Boseman was for black kids and adults alike as the first black superhero for them to look up to. Spoke about how the football world saw the likes of Paul Pogba Jessie Lingard and other amazing athletes do the Wakanda forever salute on the various fields of play.
Gave a couple of instances where Pierre Aubameyang, the Arsenal/Gabon player wore masks of superheroes like Batman and spiderman for goal celebration because those are some of the superheroes he's known until the release of Black Panther in 2018. Zoomed to how the release of the movie has given Aubameyang something to identify with as the Gabon National team are also known as Panthers.
It was fulfilling to see Aubameyang do the Wakanda salute today of all days.
"Purpose is the essential element of you. It is the reason you are on the planet at this particular time in history. Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill." —Chadwick Boseman.
